Welcome to
my photo and motorcycle trip website.
This is my darkroom where I make silver gelatin black and white photographs in a traditional manner.
Photography and motorcycling analogy
Developing film helps me connect and involves me in the process of creating an
image. That, and it keeps down the cost of using film and that allows me to continue using the vintage/old school cameras that I prefer using.
Similarly, I enjoy wrenching on, and riding vintage/old school motorcycles. This is much more satisfying for me than riding a modern bike that needs to be taken to the dealer for
maintenance and repair. I enjoy getting my hands dirty.
I ride a motorcycle, not simply to get from point A to point B. I ride because I enjoy the journey aspect, the manner of getting there on a motorcycle. Similarly, I enjoy the film based
process of photography. It's not just all about the final image/destination. It is also about the manner/process of achieving that image.
From digital photographers one hears:
"It's all photography."
"No one cares if its film or digital."
"The final image is all that matters."
MY feeling is this: Film based photography and wet darkroom printing is like music created in a live performance of a band. Digital photography is likemusic created in a studio session using
a drum machine.
Art should unsettle the settled, and settle the unsettled.
